The people who keep a home running are the first to be forgotten in the Diwali rush and the last to complain about it. Every year the maid gets a box of mithai that has been re-gifted twice, the driver gets a shirt in the wrong size, and the security guard gets a handshake. This is the post that fixes that, with the numbers people are too polite to ask about.
First, the bonus. It is cash, and it is not optional.
The convention across most of urban India is one month's salary as the Diwali bonus for anyone who works for you regularly: the domestic help, the cook, the driver, the nanny. For society staff you don't employ directly, the society usually collects a pool; add to it, and give something personal on top to the people you actually see every day.
Give it in an envelope, by hand, in the week before Diwali. Not on a UPI request. Not after the festival. The envelope matters more than the amount.
Then the gift. Useful, dignified, under ₹500.
The gift goes with the envelope, not instead of it. The test for a good one: would they buy it for their own home if they had ₹500 to spare? A torch, a blanket, a good bottle, a proper umbrella pass that test. A photo frame does not.
Buy the same thing for everyone in the same role. Six identical gifts in different colours is fairness you don't have to explain.

Sweets, unless you also give the envelope. Your old clothes, however good. Anything that needs an expensive refill or a monthly plan. Alcohol, always. And the steel dabba set: it isn't wrong, it's just the gift everyone else is giving.
A short script for the awkward moment
Hand over the envelope first, then the gift, then say the sentence you'd say to a colleague: 'Thank you for this year. Happy Diwali to you and the family.' That's it. No speech, no photo.
Good questions
How much Diwali bonus for a maid in 2026?+
One month's salary is the norm in metros. Part-time help who come for an hour a day usually get a full month of their part-time pay. Give it in cash, in an envelope, before Diwali.
Should I gift the security guard and society staff too?+
Yes. Contribute to the society's Diwali pool, and give something small and useful directly to the people you interact with daily: a torch, gloves, a bottle.
Is it okay to give sweets to house help on Diwali?+
As an addition, yes. As the whole gift, no. Sweets spoil, get re-gifted, and signal that you didn't think about it.
