Half of Goa arrives on an overnight sleeper bus from Mumbai, Pune or Bengaluru, and the seats recline exactly as far as the person behind you allows. Memory foam that actually holds your neck is the difference between arriving at 7 am ready for the beach and arriving ready for a nap. Nobody flies into Goa overweight. Everybody flies out that way — cashews, a market lamp, the shirts you swore you wouldn't buy. Hook it through the handle, lift, read the number, and the airline counter loses its power to surprise you. Be honest about who this is for: flyers only. If you came by train or bus, this is ₹600 you don't need to spend.
Hostel vs resort: pack differently
The same trip needs two very different bags depending on where you sleep. Here's the honest split:
Hostel trip: definitely pack
- A padlock — lockers are 'bring your own lock' and karma steals slippers
- Quick-dry towel, because hostel towels are a rumour
- Flip-flops dedicated to the bathroom. Non-negotiable
- String lights and a power strip — instant friends in a six-bed dorm
Resort trip: happily skip
- Towels, toiletries, hairdryer — the resort's are better than yours
- The iron. Nobody in Goa history has been judged for wrinkles
- That second pair of 'nice' shoes — you will live in sandals
- Bluetooth speaker — the resort, and your neighbours, have it covered
One more note on the split: hostels reward the social packer and resorts reward the light one. If your trip mixes both — a very Goa move — pack for the hostel and let the resort days feel like an upgrade. It never works as well the other way around.
Nobody has ever come back from Goa wishing they'd packed more clothes. Everyone has come back wishing they'd packed sunscreen.

When's the best time to visit Goa?＋
November to February — sunny, breezy, everything open. Monsoon Goa (June–September) is gorgeous and cheap, but half the shacks shut and the sea is strictly for looking at, not swimming in.
North or South Goa for a first trip?＋
North for the classic scene — beach shacks, markets, nightlife within scooter range. South for quiet sand and actual rest. First-timers usually split: three nights north, two south, zero regrets.
How much cash should I carry?＋
UPI works almost everywhere now, but shack waiters, beach vendors and some scooter rentals still prefer cash. ₹2,000–3,000 in small notes covers a long weekend — and small notes matter, because 'change nahi hai' is Goa's real state motto.
